A Partnership between the West Glamorgan RSPB Members Group, The Gower Ornithological Society, and the City and Council of Swansea
Opening dates 2008
Bob Howells of the Gower Ornithological Society gives an opening speech in front of the gathered dignitaries.
The centre was opened on January 28th 2001.
The centre celebrates Swansea's own Site of Special Scientific Interest, which is at Blackpill.
Blackpill is an important
feeding station for migratory waders such as Sanderling, Ringed Plovers and
Oystercatchers. These birds stop over to refuel on their global journeys, from
Africa to Greenland, and the Russian Steppes, and back again.
The Blackpill Wildlife Centre has been opened to make Swansea residents and visitors aware of the importance of such a site, and to encourage them to be conscious of conservationist ideas.
Young Explorers make the most of the day. The day was so perfect, groups of the Young Explorers spent time on the beach not far from the flocks of Oystercatchers

Colin and Daphne Jones will be managing the centre. Any information about opening, or organising of events, telephone Colin at 01269 822876.
Bob Howells has been the centres inspiration. He has gathered bird visits and numbers on a daily basis since 1958, long before it was recognised as a SSSI. He has been instrumental in persuading the City Council to modify their beach cleaning methods, so as not too damage the feeding area of the visiting waders. Bob also gathers bird survey data in the adjoining SSSI's in the Loughor Estuary
The centre is available for any group to visit, whether another RSPB members group, or school. Times to be arranged with Colin or Daphne.
Inside the centre, we have maps, descriptions, leaflets about the centre, birds and conservation.
You will be able to join the RSPB and Gower Ornithological Society at the Centre.
Please make use of the facility that the City and Council of Swansea has made available for us.
